12/08/2017 - Help! I don’t know how to help my 5th grader with math! Most parents were taught a completely different mathematics than our children are learning today.
Ben Welch is a 6th grade at Windridge Elementary in Kaysville, Utah and knows all too well the struggle that can come with math. He joined us today to share why understanding the philosophy behind current math pedagogy—plus some helpful resources and concrete tips—can assist parents in guiding their child through today’s math problems!
- Shift your thinking to asking questions rather than getting answers.
- Focus on the effort given to a problem, rather than whether or not the solution was correct
- Use multiple strategies and solutions: let kids develop number sense by working flexibly with numbers.
