Utah Climbers Training for World Cup

Momentum athlete and coach Nathaniel Coleman (Momentum Team Member) and Alex Puccio (Momentum Coach) are training for the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) World Cup in Vail, CO.

Alex Puccio is a nine-time American National Bouldering Champion and has earned 13 World Cup medals since 2009, including a Gold Medal. Alex has one Climbing Gold Medal and says she is going to give it best shot to earn another.

"I feel that this is the strongest I've ever been. I feel like I'm just coming into my prime so sky's the limit. I'm more prepared than ever," she explained, "I've been very fortunate to have very supportive people in my life. My mom, especially, has sacrificed so much for me to get where I am today. She allowed me to pursue my passions and I couldn't have accomplished what I have in climbing without her support. My boyfriend Joel Zerr is a climber and a route setter with Momentum. He is there for me every step of the way. Lastly, everyone at Momentum has been encouraging of my coaching, climbing, and competing."

Alex says the bulk of her workouts surround climbing, but sees the importance of cross-training so she spends time participating in other physical activities. I run 5-6 days a week.  I do a lot of body weight exercises such as core work, push-ups and pull-ups. On top of all that, I'm still doing physical therapy on my knee 2 days a week!

Team Momentum athlete Nathaniel Coleman, who has won two national titles, is also competing in the world cup.

"I attribute much of my success to the coaching I received over the years at Momentum. I have worked with coaches Kyle O'Meara and Noah Bigwood. Both are so positive! Kyle is an amazing coach, not just in terms of climbing technique but is great at giving motivating pep talks when I'm at a roadblock. I'm also thankful to my parents and teammates for being supportive of everything I've accomplished," said Nathaniel, "I was one of the original members of Team Momentum, joining the program when the team was established back in 2008. I train 3 hours per session, 3-4 times per week.  90% of my training is indoors and 10% is outside!"

Nathaniel is also a student at the University of Utah, and says his busy life is a juggling act, but makes it work because he is passionate about climbing.

"Alex has become less of an idol and more of a friend. She's coaches me once in a while and has taught me that training isn't always fun!  She taught me that other activities will help my climbing like cardio. Working next to her at Momentum inspires me to work harder," said Nathaniel.
