Traditionally, emergency alerts sent by local agencies have been delivered exclusively to land line telephones. With the substantial shift to wireless technology, Ogden officials believe this change will make the system function far more efficiently.
"By registering their cell phone number, they do not need to be at home to receive the notification," said Lance Peterson, Director of Emergency Management for Weber County.
Residents are allowed to register up to six different phone numbers and two e-mail addresses.
In the event of an emergency, the system will send alerts to all phone numbers and e-mail addresses contained in the database. Examples include flooding alerts, missing child advisories, weather dangers, evacuation notices, and other high priority events that happen in Ogden.
"The system allows residents to receive announcements pertinent to their neighborhood," said Ogden Fire Chief Mike Mathieu.
Residents can register for the alerts on Ogden's official website, OgdenCity.com.
