SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah)-Utah comes in at number eight for prescription painkiller overdose rates, according to a new report released today by Trust for America’s Health.

The report says Utah’s drug overdose rate has increased 59 percent since 1999. Utah scored a six out of ten for strategies aimed to slow prescription drug abuse in the state.

The report shows deaths from prescription drug overdose have quadrupled across the country in just a decade. Nationwide the numbers tell an expensive story. The study says that an estimated $53.4 billion is spent each year in medical costs, lost productivity, and criminal justice costs.
