Dr. Dustin Hancks’ work partly focuses “jumping genes”-- genes that can ultimately result in unwanted cell growth.
“Occasionally when they jump the can insert into genes and kill the gene,” said Hancks. “Which can result in different cellular processes which can lead to unwanted cell growths, that is one of the hallmarks of cancer.”
Hancks said it basically boils down to figuring out how cancer works. “The best analogy is everybody is familiar with cars, cars break right if you really want to be able to fix that car you need to understand how cars work in the first place right? So we're really focusing how the car works,” he explained.
