Rachel, an active 30 year-old who's always enjoying Utah’s outdoors suddenly found herself holed up in the hospital. Her diagnosis was leukemia.
“There's a lot of uncertainty in this, things are going well at the moment, but there’s a lot of uncertainty,” she said.
A Pharmacy student at the University of Utah, Rachel said she knew enough about medicine to know there's hope for treatment, but nothing could have prepared her for what it would cost to save her life.
Rachel is on student health insurance, but it only covers up to $100,000.
“When I was first diagnosed I was in hospital for a month and I think two weeks in they told me the bill was at $140,000,” she said.
What insurance pays is a drop in the bucket compared to what she'll need to get her through the chemotherapy she'll be on for the next four months.
Those who know Rachel can't stand by and do nothing. Her dance instructor tells ABC4’s Kim Johnson she misses Rachel at salsa practice. So this Friday, he friends are throwing a dance show like no other all for Rachel.
“There’s ballroom dancers, there's salsa dancers, singers, comedians,” said Maria Ivanova, of DF Dance Studios who is helping coordinate the fundraiser. The public is invited for just $5 dollars a ticket and proceeds will go to pay for Rachel’s medical bills.
