Provo Police commanders say they were contacted on Wednesday by a Provo School District official who advised them that one of their police officers may have been involved in inappropriate behavior while on duty as the School Resource officer (SRO).
Police said the alleged misconduct occurred at Provo High School when the officer participated in a Birthday celebration for one of the school’s employees. According to Provo officials, the alleged misconduct included reports that the officer was wearing inappropriate clothing and engaging in inappropriate behavior that, if true, directly violated police policy, and department ethical standards.
Police say an internal investigation was initiated and the officer was reassigned immediately.
According to police, internal investigators interviewed several people who were involved in the alleged incident on Thursday.
Provo officials say the officer has been removed from his assignment as the SRO for Provo High School and placed on paid leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
“We have worked very hard to overcome past perceptions of our department. We have also worked very hard to gain the trust and respect of the citizens we serve. While this incident has the potential to drag us backwards, I am confident that the hard work of our department coupled with the many great things we do each day and our swift and serious handling of this incident will help us to maintain the support and confidence of our community, ” Provo Police Chief Rick Gregory.
