Olympic gymnasts put on show for Utah fans

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (ABC 4 Sports) - Olympic gymnastics champions from the past and present put on quite a show at the Maverik Center Thursday night much to the delight of thousands of fans.

"I can't believe they're here!" screamed one young excited fan.

2012 all-around champion Gabby Douglas joined teammates Jordyn Wieber and Ally Raisman, along with 2008 all-around gold medalist Nastia Liukin in a celebration of American gymnastics.

"It's fun when you're able to really perform without having the expectations of the weight of the country on your shoulders," said Liukin. "You can really engage the crowd. You can smile, you can clap, you can sing and cheer for everybody. It's just really a lot of fun."

From Carly Patterson to Liukin to Douglass, the United States has produced the last three all-around Olympic champions, not to mention the gold medal won by the women's team in London. So does that mean Team USA is now the standard bearer in womens gymnastics?

"We've set the bar pretty high," said Liukin. "It's very motivating. I remember in 2008, knowing just four years ago one of my teammates [Patterson] won the Olympic all-around gold. So, it made it seem very realistic, and I think that's what I think is very cool for the younger generation to know that it really is possible."

It's possible for young gymnasts like 8-year-old Aleah Olson from Highland. She was picked as a feature gymnast to perform in the show alongside her idols.

"My favorite gymnast is Nastia Liukin," Aleah said. "I can't wait to meet her."

Maybe one day Aleah will perform as an Olympic champion herself.
