Officer injured while making arrest

CEDAR CITY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) - A police officer from Cedar City is recovering at home Tuesday night after he was beat up by someone he was arresting.
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) - A police officer from Cedar City is recovering at home Tuesday after he was beat up by someone he was arresting.

Officer Jason Thomas is a fifteen year veteran. He was arresting Logan Sawyer, 30, on drug charges including possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine and intoxication.

Sawyer’s handcuffs were removed as he was being medically cleared at a local hospital.

When Thomas tried to put them back on, Sawyer began hitting, kicking and biting him and then trying to grab the officer's gun. During the assault, Thomas sustained contusions and abrasions along with a moderate concussion.

Sawyer now faces a handful of charges. 

Thomas is expected to work next week.
