SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - An anesthesiologist who abstains from alcohol is the new chairman of the five-member Utah liquor commission.

Gov. Gary Herbert is appointing Dr. Richard Sperry to lead the the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission.

Sperry is a University of Utah professor of anesthesiology and past president of the Utah Medical Association.

Sperry has served on the commission since 2009, when he was appointed by Herbert.

He is replacing the outspoken Sam Granato as chairman. Granato was often critical of state leaders who refused to allow more bar licenses and pushed for the closure of nearly a dozen profitable liquor stores.

The commission has traditionally been chaired by a teetotaler, and a majority of commissioners don't drink alcohol.
