City Creek Center Mall is one of three targets where this man planned to conduct a mass killing. Court documents show he'd been observing people there, and had been studying how to carry out his plan.
42 year old Jack Harry Stiles is the man who could have carried out our country's next mass killing, and he planned to do it here in Utah.
Court documents obtained Monday by ABC 4 Utah shows his deadly plot. Back on August 12 Stiles told a local crisis worker how he planned to conduct a mass shooting to "kill as many people as possible". The scheduled date would've been September 25th for the anniversary of his mother's death.
The documents show Stiles had three targets: City Creek Center Mall, the Sugarhouse Movies 10 and a UTA bus or TRAX train downtown. Stiles first had planned to arrive at the mall during lunch time and "just randomly shoot and kill people." Next Stiles, would travel to the movie theatre arriving at 1:00 p.m. when it's less crowded "so he can be selective about whom to shoot and kill." Last, he had hoped to place a bomb in a bag on a bus or TRAX train and try to detonate it as it passed next to City Creek so that it would do the most damage.
On the final page, Stiles told the crisis worker "he will not intentionally shoot and kill children." However he said "he will randomly kill people until he runs out of ammunition." If he got caught, Stiles claimed he would give himself up.
Stiles got caught before he could carry this plot. Stiles is being held on one million dollars bail.
There are still a lot of unanswered questions like why Stiles choose City Creek, UTA and Movies 10, it's unclear how he was captured, and why he wanted to kill people in wake of his mother's death. ABC 4 Utah will continue to investigate and intends to get those answers in next coming days.
