SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah)- 62 people are dead and dozens of others injured. Now, people from Kenya who live in Utah gathered for a prayer vigil Monday night at the state capitol for the victims and their families.
A brief moment of silence at the Utah State Capitol comes just hours after chaos and confusion at the hands of terrorists in a Kenyan mall ends.
“That is really devastating to us,” said Kenya Musungu.
Amram Musungu saw his cousin being interviewed by CNN reporters after he fled the mass shooting.
“A cousin who just barely missed a bullet and his friend was killed. And that's all the information that I have,” said Musungu.
Musungu called on Kenyans and supporters to gather in solidarity and to pray for the victims and their families. All of those who came to the prayer vigil knew it could’ve been them.
“It was fear and worry trying to see if all of my family is safe,” said Mary Karanu.
Kenya Native Mary Karanu found out on Facebook her friend drove by the mall deciding not to stop just as terrorists took over the shopping center.
“She just barely missed it. She could have been caught up in that,” said Karanu.
Utah Lt. Governor Bell stressed his concern for what he calls an attack on civilization as a meeting place and a central location for tourists. The same spot Mark Natt and his wife visited just last year.
“How wonderful the people are, how warm the people are, how they really enjoy life and enjoy each other,” said Utah resident Mark Natt.
They’re calling on everyone to bow their heads and send love and support to Kenya to combat terrorism.
“Because I think that's the whole point of this is to spread fear and make people afraid. Let’s just stand in solidarity, support the Kenyans that are here, support the families,” said Karanu.
The biggest ongoing problem for the Kenyan Utahns is that they haven’t been able to reach their loved ones. Social media networking sites like Facebook have helped. But many people in Kenya have landline phones and when people in Utah have tried to call, they just get busy signals.
