Hockey Dad's death brings the high school sport world closer together

BOUNTIFUL, Utah (ABC 4 News) – A tragedy in the Viewmont High School hockey team is bringing the players, and their rivals, closer together.

The Bangerter family has been part of Viewmont hockey team for years. Tanner Bangerter is one of the star players and his parents Doug and Becky are at all the game and every practice.

Viewmont’s Assistant Coach Scott Hinerman explained, "Every event we do they're the first at practice, put water bottles out, they put the nets out on the ice, they are very supportive of everything we do."

With Doug’s passing Saturday from complications from a massive heart attack the team feels incomplete.

Team Captain Ryan Tall told ABC 4 News, "They're always very supportive after practices helping us out, kind of giving us advice on everything even with more than just hockey sometimes, sometimes it's life lessons."

The last lesson actually came from one of Viewmont's rivals. Right before the first playoff game and right after Doug got sick, the team from Park City came forward and began collecting donations to help the Bangerter family.

Viewmont’s Head Coach Brian Acord said, "It's a great opportunity to see the other side of competitive sporting, a side you rarely see.

That compassion has inspired Viewmont to continue the good work and hold a fundraising event of their own. On Saturday, March 2nd the players will be hosting a fundraising skate to help the Bangerter family pay for any medical bills. The Skate-A-Thon will begin at 4:15 p.m.

The Viewmont family says it's the least they can do.

"A lot of people don't see that side of hockey but a lot of us have some pretty big hearts especially when it comes to something like this,” explained Tall.

A viewing for Doug Bangerter will be held Monday night the funeral Tuesday. Viewmont’s third playoff game is Wednesday against Timpanogos.
