WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah. (ABC 4 News)- Sandy city signed an agreement Monday with Hale Centre Theatre to become the new home of the legendary theatre.

The city accepted a purchase offer from Hale Centre Theatre (HCT) to buy an 11.5 acre plot at 9950 Monroe Street in Sandy. The terms are currently awaiting approval by HCT’s Board of Trustees and the Sandy City Council.

HCT is the highest attending community theatre in the United States. It has been operating at 99 plus percent capacity since 2004.

The HCT board felt that it was necessary to expand its theatre in order to meet the theatre’s mission of providing affordable top-notch shows to families.

“We’ve been bursting at the seams for several years now, and moving to Sandy will allow Hale Centre Theatre to continue to grow and provide world-class family theatre to the community for years to come,” said chairman of the HCT Board of Trustees, Rob Brough in a press release.

There will be three separate, state-of-the-art performing spaces at the future home of the theatre. An estimated 1,800 total seats will be added. The current theatre has 613 seats. There will also be a slightly larger centre stage with one additional row and improved legroom.

In 2012 more than 255,000 guests attended more than 400 shows, including the U.S. premiere of “Zorro.”

“Bringing the nation’s most successful community theatre to Sandy will further complement our city and its unique vision, as well as help Hale Centre Theatre meet their growing demands,” said Sandy Mayor Tom Dolan in a press release. “This site has the necessary visibility, access and expansion opportunities to ensure Hale Centre Theatre will serve our community for generations to come.”
