SANDY Utah (ABC 4 Utah) - A Sandy man was booked into Metro Jail as police say he beat his grandmother-in-law to death with a golf club.
According to police, Kevin Cuillard suffered some kind of mental breakdown and locked himself in the room with the 85-year-old Arla Christiansen.
“We received a 911 call from the wife and she stated that her husband was having a psychotic episode”, says Sgt. Jon Arnold with the Sandy Police Department.
The wife told police her husband, Cuillard, grabbed golf clubs from the garage and went back into the home.
“He had locked himself into her grandmother's bedroom and he was attacking her with the golf club,” says Sgt. Arnold.
His wife sent the kids out of the home and she escaped through the window while waiting for police.
When police arrived, they found Christiansen deceased and Cuillard nearby covered in blood.
"At this point there's still some question about what was the switch that caused him to act out the way that he did," Sgt. Arnold says.
According to police, Cuillard’s motive was to make things better. He said had he not beaten the woman, things would have been worse.
Cuillard had no criminal history prior to the incident and his family just moved into the neighborhood.
