HEBER, Utah (ABC4 News) - It's been a year since a driver ran down a woman on her horse in Park City nearly killing her.

On Saturday, friends, including a former PGA Masters champion, are celebrating Lacey Picard's progress in recovering and hope to help her in the long road still ahead.

“To know Lacey is to love her,” said Cheryl Edvalson, a friend of Lacey’s.

Those closest to her won't ever forget the day their friend's life turned upside down.

“I saw her laying there all hooked up to a billion tubes,” said Edvalson. “She had beautiful long hair, part of it had been shaved off.”

Last September, the 38 year-old chiropractor was riding her horse when she was struck by a car. Lacey suffered a traumatic brain injury and it's taken a year to get to the point where she can talk. But she still cannot move her left side and remains in a wheelchair in an assisted living facility.

“We’re told it's going to be a very long recovery,” said Edvalson. “It’s been over a year and she's still recovering.”

Lacey's medical bills are mounting. “It's estimated she needs a million dollars or more at this point,” said Aubrey Sauer, Lacey’s friend.

At Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Heber, her friends, family and former PGA Masters champion Mike Weir came together to play a little golf and hopefully raise a lot of money to help their beloved Lacey.

“I'm her to support Lacey,” said Weir. “Lacey is a good friend of mine and my wife's and she suffered a horrific accident, but she's on the road to recovery and we're here to support her.”

Though Lacey couldn't attend the event, she made sure she everyone knew how grateful she is through an iPad video.

“I'd like to broadcast a big, huge thank you,” said Lacey. “It's so awesome.”
