This month, we’re looking into all the latest fitness trends to see what works and what doesn't. We’re starting with CrossFit. ABC 4 Utah anchor, Kim Fischer has decided to put herself through a rigorous 5 week training program to show you exactly what this workout entails. Here’s what she has to say about the beginning of her journey.
When you walk into a CrossFit gym, there’s not much to look at. Bare walls, rubber floors, lots of bars and ropes, that’s why these gyms have been given the nickname “the box."
But before I could hop right into a lesson, owner of CrossFit Park City, Chris Spealler wanted to make sure I was ready so I didn't hurt myself.
"What kind of goals do you have coming in here is there anything for you that you want to do," Spealler asked me.
As I told him, an ankle injury 2 years ago left me sidelined for several months. As a woman in my 30's, the body hasn't sprung back like it used to. I told him I just wanted to tone up, and get in better shape over all.
I had been working out at a gym, but I was not seeing results. Chris said with the right regimen that would change. Did I mention that regimen involves a lot of hard work?
"The definition of CrossFit is constantly varied, functional movement, and high intensity," Spealler said.
The constant variation means no workout is ever the same.
"We’re always changing that up, the real reason why is to give you a really big base of fitness," Spealler said.
A big base of fitness that's also functional.
"We don't want to be good just inside the gym, we want to be good outside the gym as well," Spealler said.
With the average workout only being 15 minutes, you know that work is intense.
"Intensity is just hard work, that's all that is," Spealler explained.
My first 3 visits were strictly personal instruction, getting me back to the basics, and working on my form.
“At our affiliate we teach, we always teach, that's something that's really important to us," Spealler said.
After personal instruction I was ready for the group. That's where I met Nikki Dodson and Lori Dearing.
"I’m a hiker, mountain biker, rock climber and I just wanted a little more endurance, that's why I started CrossFit," Dearing said.
Dodson was more into the group setting, "I don't have any real specific goals but I think it's good for motivation coming in every day," she said.
For the next few weeks, cameras will follow our progression to see how CrossFit affects three different women with different goals.
CrossFit is a very intense work out so if you plan on trying it, consult your physician first.
Along with CrossFit, I’m eating a strict meal plan called the "Paleo Diet" to get maximum results. Over the next month, I’ll introduce you to that diet, the juicing trend, and of course we'll follow up with our CrossFit sessions.
