SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A Salt Lake City defense attorney was stabbed early Thursday morning, and went door-to-door asking residents for help.

Police say 63-year-old Steven Killpack knocked on doors along Douglas Street, seeking help and leaving a trail of blood before a neighbor gave him assistance and called 911.

Police say an individual was in custody for questioning.

Police responded to the incident at 200 S. Douglas Street (1240 East).

“We get pointed to a guy who was covred in blood saying that was a suspect someone involved,” says Carlie Wiechman of Salt Lake City police.

Police say the suspect was covered in blood and near the crime scene.

Neighbors say the homeowner is Steven Killpack, a former federal public defender.

Right after Killpack was stabbed neighbors who didn't want to be identified say he came running to their door bleeding.

“He came halfway up our sidewalk and for whatever reason he didn't knock on our door,” says Cindy.

And then Killpack ran to the next house ringing the doorbell.

“I came out immediately and found a man on my front lawn bleeding pretty severely,” says John who lives next door.

They called 911 and then came to his rescue. Killpack was bleeding badly but managed to tell his neighbors what happened.

“He had said that he had a fight with a burglar who had apparently come into his house and stabbed him several times,” John says.

Neighbors say Killpack was stabbed several times and they kept pressure on the wounds until help arrived.

“It's pretty frightening,” John says. “You don't think it will happen in your front yard. It's a real concern, very frightening.”

Police say Killpack was taken to the hospital in very serious condition. No further details were available about his condition. As for the suspect, police have not released his name.
