WEST VALLEY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - A 12-year-old boy had a rude awakening this week when he came to in a moving van with an apparent thief behind the wheel.

Juan Ramirez recalls the moments he felt the rumble of the van's engine, screams and the sounds of a man behind the wheel of the speeding vehicle he was inside.

"I could feel the van moving and I could hear faint yelling," said Juan Ramirez.

A chill ran down his body when he looked up and saw a strange man behind the wheel. The man's name is Bradley Kane. Juan's mother was talking with Kane inside a Subway Restaurant on the corner of 3300 South and State Street in West Valley. Kane was apparently drunk when he left the restaurant and climbed into drivers seat of an idling van.

"I could smell the alcohol in his breath." Ramirez remembers.

The van speed down State Street as the young boy sat there dazed not know what to do. Then his instincts kicked in.

He climbed up from the back seat the van's middle seat and shut the side door which was left open.

Seconds later, Juan fired off several questions like, "Who are you? Why are you doing this? Where are you taking me?" Kane's only response was 'To a Motel," Ramirez recalled.

"I told him I was going to call the cops and then he crashed," said Ramirez.

Kane looked back at Ramirez seconds before hitting another parked car along the roadway. Kane then tried to jump out of the moving van but his pants were stuck on the door as it continued moving.

Juan says he jumped up into the driver seat pushed on the brakes. A short time later police arrested Kane. Juan escaped without injury.
