MURRAY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) - Starting Wednesday night troopers with the Utah Highway Patrol are cracking down on unsafe drivers during the 4th of July weekend, that includes a special emphasis on drunk driving.

Troopers tell ABC 4 Utah typically a lot of people on the road die on the 4th of July. The Utah Highway Patrol hopes by holding a holiday blitz, they can save lives.

Starting Wednesday night at 9:00 p.m. hundreds of extra troopers are gearing up and going out to stop drunk driving. The goal isn't only to bust people drinking and driving, troopers want to prevent all impaired drivers from threatening others' safety on the street. So they're warning people across the state, Wednesday through Sunday, troopers statewide will be out in force.

"From East to West, North to South, we're looking for impaired drivers, seatbelt violations, speed violations, distracted driving and drowsy drivers," said Col. Daniel Fuhr, Superintendent of the Utah Highway Patrol.

The heavy part of the blitz begins Wednesday night through 3:00 a.m. Thursday morning, but ABC 4 Utah is told extra troopers will be out all weekend. UHP is hoping when people see troopers pulling people over, those who drink will be more motivated to find another way home.
