SPANISH FORK CANYON, Utah (ABC 4 News) – Two people were taken to the hospital after a head on collision on State Route 89, Friday night.

Just after 8 p.m. a southbound car attempted to pass a slow moving vehicle. A pickup truck was headed northbound at the same time. The car and the pick up hit nearly head-on.

The accident happened on State Route 89 near mile marker 301, which is near the Utah County and Sanpete County Border.

The roads were snow covered and slick. Utah Highway Patrol says the cause of the crash was driving too fast for the road conditions.

One driver was in critical condition and was transported by ambulance to the mouth of Spanish Fork canyon, where he was transferred to a medical helicopter and taken to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. The second driver was in poor condition and was transported by ambulance to the same medical center.

The highway was closed for about an hour for medical response and investigation.
