Search and rescue crews find hikers missing near Zion National Park

KANE COUNTY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) – Search and rescue crews found two Salt Lake City area women who were missing near Zion National Park.
KANE COUNTY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) – Search and rescue crews found two Salt Lake City area women who were missing near Zion National Park.

The two women, ages 51 and 40, began their hike Thursday from a point South of Mount Carmel Junction and west of Highway 89 in the East Fork of the Virgin River.

The two women were planning to hike to a popular spot called Fat Mans Misery and out their vehicle parked at Checkerboard Mesa in Zion National Park.

The hikers planned to be out by Sunday morning.

Sunday evening Kane County Dispatch was notified of their overdue arrival.

Monday morning Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter out of Cedar City flew to Kanab this morning and picked up a Kane County Search and Rescue member and flew the entire route designated on maps that were being used by the women.

Ground teams were deployed in the search and the two women were found Monday afternoon.
