MOUNTAIN GREEN, Utah (ABC 4 News)- The Morgan County school district has closed both Mountain Green Elementary School as well as the Morgan Elementary School because of the amount of snow the towns have received. Other schools in the Morgan School District remain open.
Ken Adams, the superintendent for Morgan County Schools said the decision was made after buses carrying high school and middle school students stalled on Hwy. 89 and other steep canyon roads. Accidents had shut down Hwy. 84 making it difficult for half the district's teachers who live out of the area to get to work.
"I was like, did we miss a couple holidays, is it Decebmer already?" said Trudy Toone, who is a recess aide at Morgan Elementary. "I was thrilled because they make me go and stand out in it." Toone's two boys were excited to get a snow day and go sledding. "Awesome!" is how Tate, 7, describes the day.
But others without power were not so thrilled. The owner of Old Farm Market had to resort to creative ways to keep business going. "We had battery back ups so now we're doing it like we did it in the 50s and 60s we're doing it manually," said Bob Wilcox. "No credit cards just figuring everything out by hand."
Adams said Mountain Green Elementary also experienced power outages, three during Thursday. He said in his 36 years with the district he has never had to canceled school for snowfall this early.
