MURRAY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) - A federal fugitive lead police on high speed chase Friday night in Murray. It ended in a crash and the suspect is on his way to jail.
The man police arrested is 37 year old Jerry Joseph Romero of Salt Lake City. Around 8:00 p.m. West Valley City police said they spotted him driving a stolen Acura near 4800 South and 5th West in Murray. Romero tried to drive away, he actually drove under a set of TRAX arms coming down and then crashed into a parked car. He got out and tried to run, but by that time police had him surrounded. K9's chased after him and police caught him. They said they're glad to have him off the streets.
"He has an extensive criminal history, he's currently wanted on an ATF federal firearms warrant so he's a fugitive with the ATF," said Lt. Kent Stokes, West Valley City Police.
Romero will be booked on that warrant as well as new charges for fleeing, hit and run and resisting arrest.
ABC 4 Utah is told one police officer was injured during the arrest. He was bitten by one of the other officers' K9s, but the injuries were minor. He's expected to be okay.
