Most girls dream of their perfect prom: the date, the flowers and the all important dress! But unfortunately, that dress isn't always an easy reality. 13-year-old Shayla Belnap already gets that and is working to figure out a way around the problem.
Shayla said, "I want everyone to have the time of their life, without spending a ton of money."
That's where the Values Closet idea came for the Belnap women.
Mom Michelle said, "I kept asking, why isn't someone doing this? So I decided, I'll do it!"
Michelle sent out a simple message on Facebook: bring me your old dresses, and i'll get them to girls who need them.
Michelle said, "Within three days I had 35 dresses, they just keep coming."
The simple request exploded.
The Belnap family's living room and closets are now filled with dresses, dresses that will go to girls who need them. Michelle's plan is to make up a borrowing system. Girls can leave a small deposit, and when they bring the dress back and in good condition they get that money back.
While the Belnap girls are still getting this project going, they are already seeing the direct impact of their service.
Michelle said, "It really rewarding to know that you are providing someone with something they might not otherwise have."
