SPANISH FORK, Utah (ABC 4 News) – A tragedy and a miracle has caused a whirlwind of emotions for a Utah County family.
Madison Wallace, an Orem native, jumped into a river in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Thursday. The 16-year-old was trying to save her younger brother, Garrett Wallace.
A bystander, Lyle Eagletail, went in after the children. Garrett survived. Madison and Lyle did not.
“She must have known that she might not come out,” Steven Knaphus, Madison’s uncle said. “We’ve had constant tears. It’s just been really sad.”
The family had held out hope search and rescue crews would find Madison alive on Thursday night.
“We were on pins and needles just scanning the internet, trying to find news feeds, Twitter feeds, anything that would give any new updates about the search,” Alissa Huntsman, Madison’s aunt, said.
Madison’s body was found Friday afternoon.
The family said Madison and Garrett’s parents are heartbroken.
Madison will be brought back to Utah to be buried.
