BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) - If you're an animal lover, a recent discovery in Big Cottonwood Canyon may make you sick to your stomach. Police said a pair of hikers found a basket full of decapitated animals heads.
Normally Big Cottonwood Canyon can be a pretty peaceful place, but last week police said a pair of hikers made a gruesome discovery.
"They found a basket with a number of chicken heads, goat heads inside of it, as well as a large garbage sack off to the side of it," said Det. Jared Richardson, Unified Police Dept.
Police said the hikers were fishing in a pond downstream, began walking up along the creek, and found the animal heads sitting under a bridge near the mouth of the canyon. The way witnesses describe it, it appeared to be some type of animal sacrifice.
As surprising as it may seem, police said they find similar animal sacrifices up the canyon- often.
"Through the years we've had a number of these instances about six a year is what we average," said Richardson.
So, who could do such a thing? ABC 4 Utah posed that exact question to Mental Health Expert Lewis Galway.
"They lack compassion. They have an anomaly of the brain which makes it so they are unable to feel compassion for others," said Lewis Galway, Director of Advanced Behavioral Counseling.
So far police don't know who it is. They hoping hikers, campers, and other canyon visitors can help officers catch whoever's behind it.
"We've put up cameras up where these scenes are located at, but we always seem to be just behind them doing this," said Richardson.
So police could use your help. If you come across something up the canyon that looks like animals were intentionally killed, give police a call.
