Chaz Bono has quickly become the most controversial person ever invited onto Dancing With the Stars. He even eclipses Playboy Bunny Kendra Wilkinson, reality star Kate Gosslin and Bristol Palin - the controversial daughter of politician Sarah Palin.
But Chaz says all he wants to do is dance, “I'm going to be dancing. I'm not up on there talking about anything other than dancing."
The American Family Association disagrees. They say Chaz and ABC are pushing a political agenda nd it could harm families. “We will not be able to watch the show with Chaz on there. This is going to be very confusing for children. And should not be included in their cast," states Monica Cole of the American Family Association.
Chaz does admit that even though he's just dancing, he says his presence could be helpful for some, “To all the teens and kids out there with Gender Disphoria its going to really have a positive impact. People who don't have Gender Disphoria aren't going to catch it by watching me dance on television."
When we hit the streets of Salt Lake City, we couldn't find anyone who wouldn't watch Dancing With the Stars because of Chaz.
“Honestly it's a little heartbreaking. I don't see how that could ever send a message of love,” expresses Taylor Hayes.
Michael Alleman agrees, “I think it's stupid people boycotting him, boycotting the show because of him. He should be able to live life as he wants.”
“Chaz Bono is like anybody else. There's probably someone else on the show whose lifestyle someone else won't like,” adds Betty.
The producers of Dancing With the Stars are standing behind their choice, saying one of the show's strengths is the ability to change preconceived ideas about people. The new season of Dancing With the Stars steps off on Monday, September 19th. And with the all the attention on Chaz, a lot of people are wondering what about Cher? Chaz says he would love to see her on the show. And producers are pushing for just that. Perhaps Chaz will dance while Cher sings. You'll have to tune in to find out.
