SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 Sports) - It was quite the homecoming for former Bountiful High and University of Utah star Jake Gibb. The 2-time Olympic beach volleyball player teamed with former BYU star Casey Patterson to win their first round match over Casey Jennings and Stafford Slick, as the AVP Tour opened its 2013 season at Liberty Park.

Gibb and Patterson advance to the second round Saturday morning against Jon Mesko and Bill Strickland.

"I played awful, but my partner played like a stud," said Gibb, who played in the 2008 and 2012 Oympics with former partner Sean Rosenthal. "He carried us to a win. It was a tough first round match, but we're super stoked to get through.

Hundreds of fans lined the court to get a look at the local star.

"This is home," said Gibb. "I started playing here 20 years ago, so I'm stoked to be home. It's awesome."

On the women’s side, each of the top eight all teams advanced to Saturday in the winner’s bracket including three-time Olympic Gold Medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings and her partner Whitney Pavlik who defeated Utah natives and cousins Airial Sprague and Brenda Whicker. Sprague and Whicker were defeated in their second match of the day, ending their Salt Lake City Open bid in the double-elimination tournament.

Three of the eight teams that earned berths in the main draw tournament through Thursday’s open qualifier delivered winning performances on the first day of main draw competition, upsetting their higher seeded opponents for a spot in Saturday’s winner’s bracket, including the twelfth-seeded team of Andrey Belov and Adam Roberts, who upset fifth seeded team of Billy Allen and Braidy Halverson.
