Gibb, Patterson advance to AVP semifinals

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 Sports) - Bountiful's Jake Gibb and former BYU star Casey Patterson advance to the semifinals at the AVP tournament at Liberty Park.
SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 Sports) - Jake Gibb is two wins away from winning his hometown tournament.

Gibb, a 2-time Olympian from Bountiful, teamed with former BYU star Casey Patterson to defeat Tri Bourne and John Hyden, 21-19 and 21-17.

"We are were we want to be," said Patterson. "We're still in the winners bracket, and it puts us in a good position to win this tournament."

Also advancing to the semifinals were Gibb's former partner Sean Rosenthal and Olympic champion Phil Dalhausser. If both teams win their semifinal matches Sunday morning, they will play for the title.

In the women’s bracket, the eighth-seeded team of Christal Morrison Engle and Tealle Hunkus upset the top-seeded team of April Ross and Jen Kessy, sending the Olympic silver medalists to the contender’s bracket. Engle and Hunkus also won their second match of the day, earning themselves a place in Sunday’s 11:30 a.m. semifinals, where they will face the winner of Sunday’s much-anticipated 9 a.m. contender’s bracket matchup between Ross/Kessy and three-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings and her partner Whitney Pavlik.

Walsh Jennings and Pavlik fell Saturday to third-seeded Jen Fopma and Brooke Sweat, who secured a spot in an 11:30 Sunday semifinal.
