District cancels Herriman High School play

HERRIMAN, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Herriman High School's upcoming play "All Shook Up" was canceled after a complaint from the community said it was not appropriate for the high school and it's audience.

Herriman High School's drama department found out about the cancellation during their first day back from the winter break. The students and teachers met together to learn their show would not go on.

The complaint came to the district right before the holidays concerned the play the High School was working on, "All Shook Up" contained questionable material.

During the break the district looked over the script and decided it did not work with the district's new drama policy.

Sandy Riesgraf, Director of Communications at Jordan School District, told ABC4 News, "Under our newly revised drama policy there are some concerns that some of the content may be offensive to some of our patrons."

This decision was a blow to the student actors. None of them would go on camera, but they did take to twitter.

@LeighAnne wrote: "Musical is cancelled. I had lines and songs memorized."

@ Orgishbliss wrote: "Jordan school district. first they ruin Christmas break, and now the musical."

Riesgraf said, "This is what the community wanted after Dead Man Walking. They wanted a revised and new policy that's what we came up with and we do what we have to do."

After the contention at Bingham High School last year, the district now has a group of school and community leaders who approve scripts. Herriman's "All Shook Up" was chosen before the change and nobody took a second look at it, until now months after rehearsals started.

Riesgraf said, "We wouldn't be doing our jobs if we didn't follow that revised policy."

Riesgraf told ABC4 News the district told the school they would cover whatever money they needed to perform a new play. The students and teachers are trying to select a new script and will get to work on the new production.
