American Fork High School's marching band gathered in their band room this morning for an announcement some of the kids were a little worried about.
Madison Murdock, AF High School Junior, said, "It was going through the band he was going to stand up there and say he was retiring, so we were nervous."
Thomas Judkins, an AF Sophomore, was worried too, "We kept saying, he can't do that. He is such a great director."
The rumor: Band Director John Miller was going to announce his retirement after 27 years leading the marching band.
He led the kids on for a minute, but instead of announcing his retirement invited Wesley Whatley to the front. He is the Creative Director for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
In front of the band members Whatley announced: the American Fork High School Marching band was selected to march in the 2014 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
This was a shock for the students, and an exciting invitation for the band's director.
John Miller said, "The Macy's Parade are the only two premiere things a band can be involved in."
Whately told students hundreds of bands from around the world applied, but they were part of a small group of only ten that were selected.
To celebrate the invitation, the band continued a Macy's tradition: throwing confetti everywhere!
