SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 UTAH)-The first day of the Salt Lake Comic Con is a wrap. Thousands of fans showed up in full costume ready to meet their favorite characters. 30,000 people already bought tickets for the first-ever event.

It was packed, loud, and all things comic books and super heroes. The out-of-this-world event debuted for the first time in Salt Lake City to the glee of fans from all generations.

“Geeks and nerds are in, weirdos are still out,” said Ken Sanders of Ken Sanders Rare Books.

It’s the cool thing to do: head to the Salt Lake Comic Con and see your favorite childhood characters.

“It’s like me growing up again, only better,” said fan Drew Taylor.

The Gabrielson sisters couldn’t wait to dress up. Savannah is Darth Vador.

“He can choke and he has a light saber,” said Savannah Gabrielson.

Accessories make the costumes and give super heroes the edge to fight the bad guys. But 61-year-old comic book collector Bud Plant remembers a time before the video games and movies based on these characters hit the main stream.

“When I was a kid, we almost hid the fact that we were into comic books because you were just considered a nerd,” said comic book collector Bud Plant.

50 years later, comic cons across the nation bring-in thousands of people.

“There are people of all ages and stripes here and its just amazing diverse,” said Sanders.

But it all started with the original heroes, like Batman created in 1940. That paved the way for shows like the Power Rangers now celebrating its 20th Anniversary.

“40 countries around the world, the biggest kid show ever, its been running for 20 years, and wow here we are,” said Walter Jones former Power Ranger.

More big name celebrities will be at the Salt Lake Comic Con throughout the weekend including Lou Ferrigno and Stan Lee.
