A couple of years ago Salt Lake City intersections were monitored to see how many cyclists were actually on the streets. In just one month time they logged 5,500 bicycle riders. Now those cyclists commutes are about to get a whole lot easier and safer.
UDOT Spokesperson John Gleason explained, "This is a win, win situation for both bicyclists and drivers. It allows bicyclists to see exactly where they're supposed to be positioned to be detected and it also allows drivers to know that we all need to share the road with bicyclists."
The radars are up at 10 busiest bike intersections in the state, but if this works UDOT says it could be expanded statewide.
Dee Sargent works at Salt Lake City Bicycle and when the weather's nice he likes to bike to work.
"I live down in Murray about 5300 South and I ride into work on my road bike when I can usually come up 9th or 8th which are bike friendly roads,” said Sargent.
He says the new sensors that will pick him up when he's on his bike and waiting at a red light could make his commute much quicker.
"If lights are working my way it can take me 35 minutes to get to work,” said Sargent. “If lights are against me it can take over an hour.”
That's if he's abiding the law and stopping at all the red lights. UDOT hopes the new sensors will keep bicyclists from taking the risk of running a red.
Gleason said, "Bicyclists would roll up to an intersection they wouldn't be detected and they would have to wait for an extended period of time at the light and a lot of them they were running the red light."
"I try to be the good boy scout and try to uphold the laws but yeah there are times where there doesn't seem to be traffic coming the other way,” said Sargent. “I’ve come to a stop. I’ve looked both ways, I’ve checked all my directions and sometimes you have to go through."
It’s something both Sargent and UDOT hope cyclists won't have to do anymore, making the commutes safer for cyclists and motorists alike.
