WEST VALLEY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Two people are behind bars after leading West Valley Police on a short chase and ramming a police car.

The West Valley City police officer attempted to pull over the vehicle around 3 a.m. at 4100 s. 3100 w. for a simple traffic violation.

Sgt. Amy Maurer a spokesperson for West Valley Police explained what it was like being in a police chase. "Just maybe a potential simple traffic stop in a heart beat turns into something other than that, so you have to be able to switch gears quickly,” said Sgt. Maurer.

That's exactly what happened Thursday morning. Instead of pulling over, 18-year-old Devin Tate took off.

Sgt. Maurer said, "It eventually ended in a cul-de-sac when the vehicle stopped. The officer believed that maybe the occupants may try to flee on foot, but the vehicle ended up doing a u-turn and ramming into the patrol car."

That's when the chase went down 4400 s. at about 3300 w.

Barbara Davis woke up to the sounds of police cars screaming down her street. "At 8 minutes after 3, according to my clock, sirens, flashing lights fly down the street."

Davis couldn't sleep through all the commotion. She said she's never seen anything like it. “There were one or two K-9 dogs in people's backyards and looking for someone obviously."

They were looking for Devin Tate and his passenger 34-year-old Mindy Tate. The dogs found Devin hiding and tracked Mindy into a nearby home.

Sgt. Maurer said, "The vehicle they were in turned out to be a non-reported stolen vehicle out of Salt Lake City. They probably took it and it just hadn't been reported as a stolen vehicle."

Both the driver and the passenger were arrested and charged with aggravated assault, possession of a stolen vehicle and evading police.
