“Literally I’ve caught hundreds of fish this caliber, if not thousands,” he said showing ABC 4 Utah’s Kim Johnson pictures of Lake Trout weighing nearly 30-40 pounds.
But it took catching one much smaller that had something bigger than he could have ever dreamed of attached to it.
It began by entering a Cabela's fishing contest. “Cabela’s has a certain amount of fish tagged in 22 states and releases them,” said Scott Johns, General Manager of the Lehi Cabela’s. “It's basically going out and trying to catch one of those tagged fish.”
Jerry says it took catching 400 fish over the course of the contest before finally one day at Rockport Reservoir he got one with a tag.
“The bottom prize was $100 so I figured hey $100 for fishing would be a pretty good bonus,” said Jerry.
But the bonus turned out to be not even close.
Jerry's tagged fish caught him a $60,000 Ranger bass fishing boat. “It was pretty fun to be me this morning waking up,” he said.
The boat is in the process of being custom-made. “I’ve been picking out my colors,” he said. “It reminds me of a kid before Christmas.”
For now Jerry plans to mount that little fish, which he happened to catch on Father's Day. Fitting because after all he says he owes everything he knows to the countless days on the lake with his dad.
“Both my boys, we taught them very well,” said Jerald Chatwin Sr. “He deserves it because he does a lot of fishing.”
