Salt Lake City more dangerous than LA and New York?

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A new study labeled Salt Lake City as one of the most crime ridden cities in the nation.

CQ Press ranks it more dangerous than New York, NY and Los Angeles, CA.

ABC 4 took the list to locals to find out what they think.

"Which City is more safe, New York or Salt Lake City?" ABC 4's Noah Bond asked Olicia Custodio who just moved from Manhattan, "Hmmm I'd have to think about that," she said sarcastically. "No, obviously Utah. Salt Lake City is way more safe than New York," she said.

"LA or Salt Lake City?" asked ABC 4's Noah Bond. "Salt Lake City," replied Roger Martinez. "Well according to this list LA is safer. What do you think of that?" Bond asked. "I don't know. Who did that list?, but I don't think so," Martinez said.

"Is Salt Lake City safer than Las Vegas on this list what do you think? Absolutely I'd say for sure it's safe," said Curtis Anderson.

Bond show him the list. It ranks Las Vegas as the 322 safest city and Salt Lake City as the 343 most safe.

"Well yeah. That's fascinating. Do they suggest any reasons as to why?" Anderson asked.

Actually Curtis Anderson the writers do. CQ Press compiled the information from FBI reports including murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and motor vehicle theft. However, the report does not have its methodology in an easy to find location next to the report.

Roger Martinez doubts the report but says he may know why Salt Lake City is ranked so low.

He says there are high crime pockets in the City-- like near the homeless shelter on Rio Grand.

"I don't think I'd feel safe walking over there at night. Do you feel safe? No, I actually got robbed last summer," Martinez said.

Regardless of what a report may reveal most people in Salt Lake City say overall they do feel safe.

"Do you feel safe is Salt Lake City?" Bond asked. "Very safe," replied Custodio.

The Wall Street Journal wrote an article in 2010 questioning the accuracy of this report. It cites the FBI and the Conference of Mayors.

There is a positive aspect to this study. Four Utah Cities were listed among the 100 safest in the U.S. Orem is the State's safest city at number 19. Provo was ranked 64, Sandy 74 and West Jordan came in at 89.
