Report: More to be done to make pipelines safer

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A new report finds that authorities could do more to prevent massive oil spills in Utah like the two near Red Butte Creek, but they'll have to decide whether it's worth the cost.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A new report finds that authorities could do more to prevent massive oil spills in Utah like the two near Red Butte Creek, but they'll have to decide whether it's worth the cost.

A report commissioned by Salt Lake City was released this week by the nonprofit Pipeline Safety Trust.

It comes two years after leaks in a Chevron pipeline spilled nearly 55,000 gallons of crude oil in Salt Lake City's eastern foothills.

Trust executive director Carl Weimer says regulators could do more to ensure the safety of the pipelines, and the oil and gas industry could be more transparent in its pipeline inspections.

Mayor Ralph Becker says Salt Lake City needs to take the lead on protecting the community, rather than leaving the job to the industry.
