Ever since his disappearance, Putnam's parents who live in Telluride, Colorado have been pounding the pavement in Salt Lake, convinced that their son is alive.
Putnam's mom Cindy has taken to the streets, literally going from neighborhood to neighborhood, posting signs and searching for him. Cindy and her husband Doug have reason to believe Putnam is in Salt Lake after several tips from people who think they may have spotted him. "It almost sseems like he's followed State Street after he got off the train and just kept walking south," said Doug Putnam.
The Putnams say their son suffers from severe anxiety disorder. They don't believe he's a danger to himself or anyone else, but they're concerned about his mental state. "A week before he got on the train he was having a lot of panic attacks," said Cindy Putnam.
Putnam, who was attending art school in Oakland, isn't the type to panhandle or ask people for things, according to his parents. Several gas station attendants and other business owners who think they may have spotted Putnam says he doesn't beg for food or money, but wanders around like a homeless person. Cindy and Doug are worried his physical health is suffering from starvation and lack of sleep. "We're worried because it sounds like he's almost starving. The woman who called me said he looked like a UNICEF poster," said Doug Putnam.
Even though Salt Lake police are continuing their investigation into Putnam's disappearance, his parents are conducting one of their own. With time and money running out, they are desperate to find their son. "Life is basically hell. Any mother can relate when your child is missing. Your life is over until you find them." said Cindy Putnam.
The Putnams are relying on tips to find their son. They ask anyone who might see him to take his picture with their cell phone and to ask for his first name. Putnam is described as 6' 1," 140 lbs., with blue eyes, blond hair and possibly wearing glasses.
Anyone with information as to the whereabouts of Putnam is asked to call (801) 799-3000.
