Cricket bars & skin care: Utah companies take over Sundance

PARK CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - This year, celebrities at Sundance got to test out some unique products made right here in Utah. Can we say energy bars made of crickets? These local entrepreneurs used the film festival to launch their products, and as we saw they're turning stars into fans.
This year, celebrities at Sundance got to test out some unique products made right here in Utah. Can we say energy bars made of crickets? These local entrepreneurs used the film festival to launch their products, and as we saw they're turning stars into fans.

Katherine Heigl, Adrian Grenier, Michael C. Hall, what do they all have in common? They're all taking Resvology Skin Care home after Sundance.

"Resvology is actually homegrown right here in Salt Lake City and we're actually launching here at Sundance," said skin care expert Jennifer Walsh.

The skincare line uses a molecule called 4-AR, which has been clinically proven to make your skin think it's younger! And the creators couldn't wait to get this week started.

We've been planning it for like a year so it's time, it's time for sure," Walsh said.

Another local product people are taking a bite out of at Sundance, the Chapul Energy Bar. It’s made of chocolate, peanut butter and cricket flour?

"It’s our way of introducing the idea of eating insects into American culture," said creator Pat Crowley.

Insects are actually eaten by humans worldwide, but here in the U.S. we typically cringe at the thought of crunching into a cricket. That's why Crowley created the flour.

"That kind of helps with people to get over the idea so they don't actually have to see the insect," he said.

There are actually about a dozen crickets in each bar.

"Really reactions are all over the spectrum but typically people are really receptive to it," Crowley said.

Restaurants in Europe, France, and New York are already adding insects to their menus, so this Utah entrepreneur is jumping on the bandwagon.

"Our tagline is feed the revolution there are changes coming in store for us and we're trying to be a positive change," Crowley said.

I'd say by hiding the crickets, they're on the right track.
