Career Services director addresses social media and the job market

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - The director of career services at Broadview University, Madalyn Veo, talks about how important your online profile is for the job market and gives a few tips on keeping your internet accounts appropriate in the case of investigative employers.
SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - LinkedIn is the number one site for professional networking. Seventy-eight percent of major corporations state that they use internet search engines to select candidate for jobs. Of those 78 percent, 68 percent use LinkedIn.

FaceBook has several apps that people can use that will help with professional networking although they are in the initial phased of development. Those apps are called "Branch Out" and "Be Known."

The benefits of Twitter come more from a "following" standpoint. Companies will often "tweet" about what they are looking for in an employee, and will alert "followers" when job openings become available. A smart job seeker would join Twitter and follow companies they want to work for or professionals in the job search arena who are assisting people in getting jobs.

Additional social media tips from Madalyn include:
  • Make sure your profile is 100% complete. This way, you will pop up in more often when employers search for particular skills and job titles. Employers seen an incomplete profile as a sign of laziness as well.
  • Have a professional picture. Make sure you look your best, if you are young make sure you are dressed professionally. If you are an older worker, make sure your profile picture exudes energy. Even think about getting a professional picture done.
  • Your summary section should contain specific information about you as a professional, not your personal life. Talk about projects you have been involved with, job specific skills, and also soft skills. Provide a snapshot of what you can do to help a company out.
  • Have at least 5 people recommend you on the LinkedIn page.
  • The people you connect with on LinkedIn are different than Facebook, there is a reason they call it a connection versus a friend. Reach out to co-workers both past and present. Specifically connect with supervisors you were close with. Connect with old instructors and people you have networked with. Be selective with who you connect too.
  • After you have connected with people and built your profile, be active in using LinkedIn. It can't help you if you are just going to let it sit. Post an update weekly, participate in group discussions. Actively ask your connections about employment opportunities.
