OREM, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Police in Orem need your help. One of the city's new road bikes, used to patrol the Provo River trail, was stolen right off the back of a patrol car.

Sgt. Gordon Smith from Orem's Police Department told ABC4 News, "They cut the cable from the lock, took it off the bike rack and they were on their way."

The men whose job is to protect the city of Orem became victims this week.

Sgt. Smith said, "I think this point someone saw a very nice bike on the back of a patrol car and the could take a trophy."

The role reversal came after an Orem Police Officer had his patrol bicycle stolen off the bike rack on the back of his patrol car. The car was parked in front of the officer's Lehi home when sometime late Tuesday somebody stole the bike.

The bikes are pretty new to the Police Department. A donation from an anonymous member of the community bought five bikes to patrol the Provo River Trail.

The trail is known for problems and those have escalated in the past few years. In an effort to prevent that, the bikes and their new patrol let the officers get right on the trail and watch our for problems.

But now, the department is down a bike limiting their ability to keep this portion of their city safe.

Sgt. Smith said, "We are now the victim, it is a strange position to be in."

The bike is a Fezzari and if it hasn't been altered should say "Orem Police Department" right on the bike.
