Below is the news release issued by the Pleasant View Police Department about why an officer shot Ramseyer:
The Pleasant View Police Department is releasing the following information that was obtained on scene immediately after the tragic accident on I-15 in Box Elder County, Utah on Friday evening March 29, 2013 involving Cody Ramseyer and law enforcement officers from four agencies. This information is being released specifically in regard to providing additional information into what had transpired and has been reported only as Mr. Ramseyer's "aggressive" behavior just prior to the fatal shooting.
The following information provides answers to that press question. Initial on-scene investigative information obtained immediately after Cody Ramseyer was transported to the hospital found that upon crashing his vehicle and coming to a stop in a patch of thin tall trees and brush off the roadway that semi-secluded him from direct/clear visual contact by the officers. Cody Ramseyer in acting aggressively:
1. Refused to exit the vehicle or show his hands as instructed by the officers.
2. Began yelling back at the officers commands, and
3. Upon exiting the vehicle and moving towards the officers through the trees/brush
i. indicated that he had a gun
ii. indicated that he was going to kill the officers, and
iii. told the officers to kill him
All while moving towards the officers in an aggressive and non-complainant manner; refusing to stop, show his hands; and continued in that manner towards the officers after compliance attempts were made with the Tasers and prior to being fatally shot. The investigation is being handed by the Utah Department of Public Safety and all further questions in regard to these and all other matters involving their final report are to be made through their office.
Our deepest condolences go out to the Ramseyer family, especially to his wife and children; and to the officers and their families, who were drawn into this tragic incident as well.
