SALT LAKE CITY, (ABC 4 Utah) – Police are investigating a homicide in downtown Salt Lake that left one man dead on a sidewalk.

Det. Dennis McGowan said a 911 call came in around 7:00 a.m., but the person quickly hung up the phone. Police went to the source of the call near the area of 970 South and 300 West and found a man in his 30’s shot in the forehead.

McGowan said several people ran away from the scene as officers approached the area.

Steve Adams, a neighbor, did not hear the gunshots, but saw the commotion when he took his dog outside.

“I think it’s pretty sad that there has to be things like that here,” Adams said. “But what can you do?”

McGowan said a group of people were possibly partying late Friday night near a commercial property on 300 West and 970 South. He is unsure of the chain of events that led to the shooting.

“There are certainly a lot of shell casings on scene that our crime lab, our version of CSI, is recovering,” he said.

Investigators made some progress early Saturday afternoon, but no arrests have been made.

“A lot of persons are coming forth and talking about what happened there last night and early this morning,” he added.

McGowan said there are still people involved that detectives are searching for.

Adams knows there may be small pockets of crime around the area, but said it is relatively safe. He wants those who bring crime to his area to stay out.

“Stay in your own neighborhood,” Adams said. “We don’t need it here. It’s a good neighborhood.”

As of Saturday afternoon police had not released the identity of the victim.
