"I was nervous at first, but it was really fun. I liked it a lot," Brielle said moments after the show was over.
You could say that being a host on Good Things Utah was on Brielle's bucket list. You see, this 13-year old may not have long to live.
Back in 2010, Brielle, the 2nd of four girls in the Beus family of Hooper, was diagnosed with acute Myeloid Leukemia. She went through rounds of chemotherapy and two bone marrow transplants. She seemed to be turning a corner, but then last month doctors told her the cancer was back. So weakened by the years of fighting, Brielle couldn't take another round of treatments. There was nothing more doctors could do.
So, Brielle now concentrates on living happy and experiencing as much as she can in the time she has left.
While on Good Things Utah, she and Gretchen laughed about their recent visit to Build-a-Bear and meeting the Jazz Bear. "I've gotten some that were already made from the hospital but it was fun being able to -- for the first time ever -- make a bear and going to Build-a-Bear," Brielle remembered as she hugged her Teddy Bear creation.
Brielle even got a ride on Jazz Bear's motorcycle.
Gretchen and Brielle became fast friends last month at a dance competition to benefit the American Cancer Society. Gretchen was one of the competitors and Brielle was a judge. Speaking for all of the judges that night, she told us, "We are excited. Very, very excited and lucky to be here."
The ladies of Good Things Utah are helping Brielle fulfill some of her dreams. Her bucket list, if she even has a list, is more about people than places or things.
Brielle says her focus for her last days on earth is "to be happy and to enjoy life like it's the last day and be able to enjoy my family 'cause that's the main thing that I'm trying to do right now."
Through all the therapy, the chemo and transplants, Brielle has indeed remained happy.
I looked, but could not find a single picture of her anywhere without her big smile. A smile belying a wisdom beyond her years. A smile that is irresistible.
