Monte Cristo Sandwiches


8 slices bread

4 Tbsp. butter

2 Tbsp. flour

1/8 tsp. kosher salt

Pinch fresh ground black pepper

3 large eggs

¼ cup milk

8 ham, thin sliced

4 slices Swiss cheese


powdered sugar for dusting

warmed jam or jelly of choice for serving


Preheat a griddle or skillet to medium heat.


Butter one side of each slice of bread with butter. Layer one side each (butter side out) with two pieces of ham and one slice of cheese. Top with another piece if bread, butter side out again to make a sandwich. Secure the sandwich with toothpicks to hold it together before dipping in the egg batter.


In a shallow bowl whisk together the eggs, milk, flour, salt and pepper to make a thin batter. Dip each of the assembled sandwiches into the egg batter, coating each side.


Spray the heated griddle with nonstick cooking spray, then cook the sandwich on both sides until lightly browned. (You can cover the sandwiches with a lid to make sure the cheese melts, or use a panini press.


Transfer the cooked sandwiches to a plates and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Serve with warmed jam or jelly for dipping. Makes 4 Sandwhiches.
