He says they improve other learning and social difficulties like memory, spelling, reading comprehension, math skills, focusing, organization, time management, speech, social skills, and physical coordination.
Dimick says having a learning disability is like having a bad cell phone connection where you only get part of what is being said. Here is an example: a teacher may ask the question; What color is George Washington's white horse?. A learning disabled student will only recieve, process, store and retrieve part of the question. They may only recieve and process the words; George Washington, white and horse. When they hear the word "horse" they retrieve a picture from memory of a brown horse with a rider wearing a black hat and white gloves. The learning disabled student will answer the question as "Brown", not white because they did not recieve, process, store and retrieve all the information presented and had to fill in the blanks with memories to make sense of that they actually received, processed and stored and retrieved.
Being in school with a learning disability is like playing football with a broken leg. You are expected to play every minute of the game, and perform as those without disabilities.
