Now, instead of selling carpets near 1300 West and 10400 South, the building will turn into an indoor shooting range.
“I like the idea,” says neighbor Pat Nell. “I like the idea there's a safe place for people to go shoot, a good place for training.”
The council gave their approval this week for the indoor shooting range at the building that now houses the Shag-Run-La.
But some neighbors who live right behind it, fear it.
“Actually we worry about the noise and kids outside playing,” says neighbor Sam Kardzhyan.
Kid safety is a big concern but so is noise and air from the indoor range being released outside.
Following the vote, concerned neighbors filed a grievance with a mediator on grounds it’s not zoned for a shooting range.
“This facility has all characteristics of being an industrial location it has noise characteristics and pollution potential characteristics, even the volume that would go through this facility,” says Randy Hughes.
But a majority of the city council disagreed with Hughes’ claims. They reviewed the research submitted by the owners of shooting range and believe pollution and noise won’t be a problem.
“The problem isn't the noise coming in from the building but its noise outside the building that will be coming into the range,” says Councilman Chuck Newton. “The traffic on the street is much louder that the range.”
