Diane Albiston says her husband, Spencer Albiston, has had diabetes for the past 20 years.
The 33-year-old man is accused of driving erratically from Pleasant Grove to American Fork before crashing into two cars near 100 East and State Street Wednesday afternoon.
Albiston was tasered once inside his van. Authorities removed him from the van and dry stunned him, which involves a stun without the shock of the taser tongs. According to Pleasant Grove police, when the man remained uncooperative after those attempts, he was tasered a second time.
“The first thing I thought was that he was having a low blood sugar episode,” Albiston’s wife said.
She said when her husband goes into diabetic shock he is not aware of what he is doing.
Their children, all under age 6, were not hurt in the chase or crashes.
“He is a devoted father and husband,” she added. “He would never do anything intentionally to hurt his children.”
Albiston is charged with driving under the influence of drugs.
His wife says Albiston is on prescription medication to control his diabetes.
