The shotgun, a Remington M887 Nitro Magnum Tactical, is being given away by utahguns.com and OPSGEAR through their Facebook page. It is called the WE THE PEOPLE Giveaway.
Terry Brown, co-founder, of utahguns.com said he has been giving a weapon away each week since the site was founded five weeks ago. The site allows people to buy and sell weapons.
“We use it to actually spread awareness and hopefully educate our fans about their second amendment rights,” Brown said.
Some Utahns are worried those rights might be taken away by the government in light of the recent debate over gun control laws.
OPSGEAR in North Salt Lake is feeling the effects of those fears. It business is a gun gear and accessories store.
“People have been coming in and buying up all the magazines,” Brandy Vega, Vice President of Media and Communications, said.
Vega said the demand, as well as the prices, have skyrocketed. An AR-15 rifle that normally cost $650 now runs upwards of about $1,500.
“We all know it’s a war out there,” she said. “We want to do our part to support the second amendment and those who think like us.”
Brown knows there are some who may not agree with what he is doing, but he said guns are part of the culture of the west.
“We believe a well armed society is a safe society,” he added.
The drawing will be held Sunday night and the winner of the shotgun will be announced on Facebook at 10 p.m.
